Speaking Time Calculator

1,000 words spoken at a natural 130 words per minute takes about 7 minutes 42 seconds — which is why a “5-minute talk” needs a script closer to 650 words.

How it works

Every speaker learns the hard way that a page is not a minute. Paste your script and see its true length aloud — then trim or pad while there is still time to do it calmly. The panel also works backwards: how many words a 5- or 10-minute slot actually holds at your pace.

Pace presets to know: about 110 wpm is slow and deliberate (ceremonies, emphasis), 130 is natural conversation and most talks, 150+ is a brisk presenter. Pauses, laughter and demonstrations all eat minutes the word count cannot see — leave a margin.

The method

Time = word count ÷ speaking rate. Rates follow the commonly measured ranges for public speaking (110 slow, 130 conversational, 150 fast). The words-for-a-slot figures are rate × minutes, the inverse calculation speakers plan with.

Check important dates twice. Every result here is worked out from the values you enter and the calendar, clock and counting conventions described on the page. Date and time answers can depend on time zones and daylight-saving rules, and counting tools follow the definitions printed with them. For deadlines, filings, payroll or anything with money attached, confirm the figure against an authoritative source.

Frequently asked questions

How many words is a 10-minute speech?

About 1,300 at a natural pace (130 wpm). At a deliberate 110 wpm it is 1,100; at a brisk 150, it is 1,500. The panel computes your exact figure from your script.

How many words per page is that?

A double-spaced page holds roughly 250 words — about 2 minutes spoken. A single-spaced page, about 500 words or 4 minutes.

Should I time pauses?

Yes — rehearse once with a stopwatch. Pauses, slide changes and audience reaction typically add 10–20% beyond the pure speaking time this tool reports.
